# Profile Picture Tester

A profile picture tester, or pfp tester, previews your photo as the round or rounded square avatar that LinkedIn, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Gmail, Zoom and X show, from the large profile view down to the small icons beside comments and chat messages.

**Key facts:** $0 - No sign-up - Runs in your browser, nothing uploaded - 6 apps, 18 avatar sizes - Circle and rounded square previews - JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC

Updated October 2026

The test runs in your browser. Your photo never leaves your device.

## How to use it

1. **Add a photo:** Drop a JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC file, or take one on your phone. The photo is opened in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
2. **Look at every size:** See the photo as six apps draw it: a circle or a rounded square, from the profile view down to comment, chat and sidebar icons. Switch to the face crop to compare a tighter framing.
3. **Fix what the test flags:** Read the small size test: face size at 32 px, whether your face fits the circle, contrast against the background, sharpness and light. Each flag comes with the fix.

## What is a profile picture tester?

A profile picture tester shows how a photo will look once an app has cropped it and shrunk it to an avatar. It answers the question a full size preview cannot: will people still recognise you in a comment thread, a chat list or a calendar invite?

This pfp tester draws your photo in neutral mock-ups labelled LinkedIn, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Gmail, Zoom and X, at three sizes each, with the shape each app uses. It then runs a short set of local checks that matter most at small sizes. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no account to create.

## Why small avatar sizes decide whether people recognise you

Most people see your profile picture far more often in small places than on your profile. A LinkedIn comment, a Slack message, a Teams chat or a Gmail thread shows it at roughly 20 to 48 pixels across. YouTube, for example, renders a channel picture at 98 x 98 px, and Facebook shows a Page picture at 176 x 176 px on computers.

At those sizes detail disappears. What survives is the outline of your head, your hair against the background and the overall brightness of your face. A photo that looks great full screen can turn into a beige blur at 32 px if the face is small in the frame or the background matches your skin tone.

## What the pfp test checks

Face at 32 px: the tester measures your detected face against the square and works out how wide it would be in a 32 px avatar. Below about 30 percent of the width, under 10 pixels, the face stops reading as a particular person.

Fits the circle: most apps cut the square into a circle, so the tester checks that the top, bottom and sides of your face sit inside it. Contrast at small sizes: it compares the brightness of your face with the background beside and above your head, using the same contrast ratio formula as web accessibility guidelines, and flags anything under 1.25 to 1.

Sharpness and light reuse the checks from our LinkedIn photo checker, and the face check confirms one face was found. All of these are rules of thumb run on your device. They can be wrong, and they never judge how you look, only how the photo reads.

## How each app shows your profile picture

LinkedIn, Microsoft Teams, Gmail, Zoom and X all show your photo in a circle, so the corners of the square you upload are never seen. Slack uses a rounded square, so more of the corners stay visible and a cluttered edge shows there first.

Every app draws the same photo at several sizes. The tester's sizes approximate each app's desktop web layout in October 2026; apps change their layouts, and phones scale them differently, so treat the sizes as a guide rather than a spec. For the upload sizes each platform publishes, see the circle crop tool's size table.

## Profile picture preview: uploaded framing vs face crop

The tester shows your photo two ways. As uploaded is the centred square an app takes from your file if you do not crop it yourself. Face crop is a head and shoulders square centred on your detected face, the same framing our cropper uses, with your eyes near the upper third line.

If the face crop passes where the uploaded framing fails, the fix is only a crop away: open the circle crop tool, choose your platform and download a square that is already framed. If both fail, the problem is in the photo itself, usually distance, light or background.

## How to fix a profile picture that fails the test

Face too small at 32 px: crop closer. If cropping leaves the face soft, retake the photo from a step or two away rather than from across the room. Head and shoulders should fill most of the square.

Low contrast against the background: stand in front of a plain wall that is clearly lighter or darker than your skin, or change the background. Soft or dark photo: face a window in daylight, keep the camera still and avoid digital zoom. Then run the test again; it takes a few seconds.

## Test profile picture options for LinkedIn and work apps

Use one photo across LinkedIn, Slack, Teams, Gmail and Zoom so colleagues recognise you everywhere. Run each candidate through the tester and keep the one that still reads in the smallest avatars, not the one that looks best full size.

For a work profile, a head and shoulders portrait facing the camera, with even light and a plain background, passes almost every check. Dating and gaming profile pictures follow different rules, but the small size test still applies: a face that cannot be recognised at 32 px is easy to scroll past.

## FAQ

### How do I test my profile picture?

Upload it to the profile picture tester above. It shows the photo as LinkedIn, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Gmail, Zoom and X avatars at three sizes each, then checks face size at 32 px, circle fit, contrast, sharpness and light. It runs in your browser with no sign-up.

### What is a pfp tester?

A pfp tester is a tool that previews a profile picture the way apps display it: cropped to a circle or rounded square and shrunk to avatar size. It helps you pick a photo that stays recognisable in comments and chats, not just on your profile page.

### How do I take a good profile picture?

Face the camera from a step or two away, in soft daylight from a window, in front of a plain background that contrasts with your skin and hair. Frame head and shoulders so your face fills about a third of the width of a square crop. Then test it at small sizes before you upload.

### Why does my profile picture look bad when it is small?

Usually because the face is small in the frame or blends into the background. At 32 px only the outline and overall brightness of your head survive. Crop closer and use a background that is clearly lighter or darker than your face.

### Should I use the same profile picture on every platform?

For work profiles, yes. One recognisable photo across LinkedIn, Slack, Teams, Gmail and Zoom helps people connect your name with your face. Pick the version that passes the small size test, since every app shows it in tiny avatars too.

### Are the preview sizes exact?

No. The sizes approximate each app's desktop web layout in October 2026, and apps change layouts and scale them on phones. The previews are neutral mock-ups labelled with each app's name, not screenshots of the apps.

### Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The photo is opened, cropped and checked by your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to Smart Headshots AI or any other server, and closing the page discards it.
