# Headshot Background Changer

A headshot background changer is a tool that separates the person in a portrait from the background behind them and replaces that background with plain white, grey, a brand color or a blurred version of the original.

**Key facts:** $0 - No sign-up - No watermark - Runs in your browser, nothing uploaded - JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC up to 15 MB - Exports PNG or JPG up to 2400 px

Updated October 2026

Your photo is processed on your device by a model that runs in your browser. It is never uploaded, stored or seen by anyone, and there is no account to create.

## How to use it

1. **Add your photo:** Choose or drop a JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC photo of yourself, or take one with your phone. The first time, your browser downloads the cut-out model, about 16 MB.
2. **Pick a background:** Start with an office blur of your original background, the default, or switch to white, light grey, dark grey or your own brand color. Turn on black and white if you want a monochrome headshot. Each change shows instantly.
3. **Download it:** Save the result as a PNG or JPG at your photo's own resolution, up to 2400 pixels on the long edge, with no watermark.

## What is a headshot background changer?

A headshot background changer finds the person in a portrait, separates them from everything behind them and paints a new background in its place. This one is built for headshots rather than for product photos or group shots: it uses a segmentation model trained on selfies, with a separate class for hair, so the shape of your head and shoulders comes through cleanly instead of being clipped like a cut-out sticker.

Everything happens in your browser. The model runs on your own device, the new background is drawn on a canvas, and the file you download is built locally. That is why there is no sign-up, no upload and no watermark: there is no server step that would need one.

## How to make a background white

To make a background white, add your photo above and pick White in the background options. The tool keeps you exactly as you were photographed and replaces everything else with pure white (#FFFFFF). Download it as a JPG for the smallest file or as a PNG if you plan to edit it further.

A white background headshot is the right call when the place it will appear uses white for everyone: a company team page with a white layout, a speaker list, a conference badge or a membership directory. It also suits a resume, where the photo sits on a white page and a colored backdrop can look like a box pasted onto the document.

White is less forgiving than it looks. Fair skin and pale clothing can lose their edge against it, and a pure white field next to a slightly warm face makes the face look darker than it is. If either happens, try light grey before you settle. For a government ID or a passport, use a dedicated passport photo service: those rules cover head size, expression and print size as well as the background, and this tool does not check them.

## White, light grey or dark grey: which headshot background to choose

Grey is the background most portrait photographers reach for first, because it separates every skin tone from the wall without competing with it. Light grey (#D6D6D6 here) keeps the bright, clean feel of white but holds a little detail around pale hair and light shirts. Dark grey (#3A3A3A) reads as more formal and senior, and it makes a white shirt or a light blouse stand out; it is the usual choice for law, finance and executive pages.

Use the brand color option when your company page or slide template has a house color. Pick something muted rather than the brightest color in your logo: a saturated background pulls the eye away from the face and makes skin look tinted. If you are unsure, compare the same photo on light grey and on your brand color side by side before you decide.

If you are pulling together photos from a whole team, one shared background does more for the page than any single choice. Pick one option here, send colleagues the link and ask everyone to use the same setting; photos taken in different rooms then sit together as a set. Light grey is the easiest to keep consistent because it tolerates small differences in light and skin tone.

For a deeper look at which backdrops suit which industries, with examples and color codes, the headshot backgrounds picker shows the full set our packs use, including the warm brown library and wood-panel backdrops popular with lawyers and authors.

## LinkedIn profile picture background and other places your headshot goes

LinkedIn shows your profile picture as a small circle, so the background mostly appears as a thin ring around your head. A plain or softly blurred background is the safe choice there: light grey, white or an office blur all keep attention on your face, while a busy room turns into noise at that size. LinkedIn accepts JPG or PNG files of at least 400 x 400 pixels and up to 8 MB, so the file this tool exports is ready to crop and upload.

On a company team page, match whatever your colleagues use. If every other photo sits on light grey, a white or blurred background will stand out for the wrong reason. On a resume, white or light grey sits best on the page. In email signatures, Slack and Teams the photo is tiny, so contrast matters more than color: a dark grey background behind light hair or a light grey one behind dark hair keeps the outline readable.

After you change the background, crop the photo to each platform's shape and size with the profile photo cropper, test how it reads as a small avatar with the profile picture tester, or score its light, sharpness and framing with the LinkedIn photo checker.

## Blur the background of a photo instead of replacing it

Sometimes you do not want a studio look at all. The office blur option keeps your own background but softens it the way a portrait lens with a wide aperture would, so a living room or an office reads as a place rather than as clutter. This tends to look more natural than a solid color when the photo was taken in daylight, because the light on your face still matches the light behind you.

The tool removes you from the photo before it blurs the background, which stops your own hair and clothing colors from smearing into a halo around you. Blur works best when the original background is not too busy close to your head: a window or a plain wall a few steps behind you blurs into a smooth wash, while a bookshelf right behind your ears can still leave a few bright spots.

## How to make a color photo black and white

Turn on the black and white switch and the whole photo, background included, is converted to grey using the standard luminance weights for red, green and blue (the Rec. 709 formula used for HD video). That keeps skin tones natural in grey instead of flat, and it works with every background option, so you can make a black and white headshot on white, on grey or on a blurred room.

A black and white headshot suits authors, artists, speakers and anyone whose page uses a monochrome style, and it hides small color problems such as mixed indoor lighting or a tint from a colored wall. It is a weaker choice for LinkedIn and most corporate pages, where color photos are the norm and a monochrome one can look dated next to everyone else's.

## Getting a clean edge around hair and shoulders

The model works at a resolution of 256 x 256 pixels, so on its own it would give a soft blob around your silhouette. The tool then refines that edge against the detail in your actual photo, which is what lets it follow loose hair and the line of a collar, and it leaves the edge feathered rather than hard so stray hairs fade into the new background instead of ending in a step.

You get a cleaner result with a photo that has clear contrast between you and what is behind you: dark hair against a light wall, or light hair against something darker. Very fine flyaway hair, curls against a busy background, hats and glasses with thin frames are the hardest cases. Hair that has the same color as the wall behind it can disappear into it. Check the edge at full size before you use the photo; at profile picture size, small imperfections are rarely visible.

Color from the original background can stay in the fine strands at the edge of your hair. If you were photographed against a green or yellow wall, a faint tint can show against a white background. Light grey or the office blur usually hides it better than pure white.

## What a new background can't fix

Changing the background changes one thing. The light on your face, the angle of the camera, how much of you is in the frame, your expression and what you are wearing all come from the original photo. A selfie taken at arm's length under a ceiling light will still look like that selfie on a perfect grey background, and lighting that falls from the left on your face but from nowhere on a flat backdrop is the most common reason a replaced background looks pasted on.

If the photo itself is the problem, retake it: face a window, stand a step or two away from the wall, hold the camera at eye level and wear a plain top in a solid color. Or let Smart Headshots AI do it: our packs turn a set of your own selfies into studio headshots where the light, outfit and backdrop are rendered together, so the background matches the light on your face.

## Your photo stays on your device

The photo you add is read, cut out and redrawn in your browser. It is never uploaded to Smart Headshots AI or anyone else, and nothing is stored once you close the page. The only downloads go the other way: the model runtime from the jsDelivr CDN and the segmentation model from Google's public MediaPipe storage, both of which then run locally. Because nothing is sent anywhere, the tool works the same for a work headshot, a family photo or a picture you would rather not share.

## FAQ

### How can I remove the background from an image for free?

For a portrait of a person, add it to the background changer on this page: it cuts you out in your browser and replaces the background with white, grey, a brand color or a blur, free and without a watermark. For product photos, logos or pictures without a person, use a general background remover instead, because this tool's model only recognises people.

### How do I make the background of a photo white?

Add the photo to the tool above and keep the background on White, then download it as a PNG or JPG. The person stays as photographed and everything behind them becomes pure white (#FFFFFF). If fair skin or pale clothing blends into the white, light grey usually looks better.

### What makes a good photo background?

A good headshot background is plain or softly blurred, sits a step or more behind you and contrasts with your hair and clothing without competing with your face. Light grey works for almost everyone, white suits resumes and white web pages, and dark grey reads as formal. Avoid busy rooms, bright saturated colors and anything readable behind your head.

### What is the best background for a LinkedIn profile picture?

A plain light grey or white background, or a softly blurred office, because LinkedIn shows your photo as a small circle where a busy background turns to noise. Keep the background quieter than your clothing so your face is the first thing people see. Upload a JPG or PNG of at least 400 x 400 pixels.

### How do I make a color photo black and white?

Add the photo to the tool above, turn on the black and white switch and download it. The whole image is converted to grey with the standard Rec. 709 luminance weights, which keeps skin tones natural. You can combine it with any background, so a black and white headshot on white or grey takes one click.

### Can I blur the background of a photo without an app?

Yes. Pick Office blur in the tool above: it keeps your original background but softens it like a portrait lens, right in your browser, with nothing to install. It works best when the background is a step or more behind you and not crowded close to your head.

### Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The cut-out model runs in your browser, the new background is drawn on your device and the file is saved straight from your browser. Nothing is sent to Smart Headshots AI or anyone else, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

### Why does the edge around my hair look soft?

The edge is feathered on purpose so loose hair fades into the new background instead of ending in a hard line. Fine flyaways, hair that matches the color of the wall and busy backgrounds are the hardest cases. A photo with clear contrast between your hair and what is behind it gives the cleanest edge.
