A headshot is "professional" when it does one job well: it lets a stranger read who you are in under a second. Framing, light, background and expression all serve that job, and the best example of a headshot is usually the least dramatic one on the page. This guide collects professional headshot examples from every pack we offer, groups them by role, backdrop and attire, and explains the visual difference between a good shot and a mediocre one. At the end you will find before-and-after pairs that show a source selfie next to the headshot trained on it, so you can judge the results honestly.

One note on the images: the role, backdrop and attire galleries below are example looks from the Smart Headshots AI packs, generated to show each option. They are not customer deliveries. The before-and-after section is where you see actual source photos next to finished headshots.

## What Separates a Good Headshot from a Bad One

A good headshot has these five qualities: tight framing, a level eye line, clear separation from the background, soft directional light, and an expression you would actually make in a meeting. Miss one and the photo still works; miss three and it reads as a snapshot.

1. **Framing and crop.** The face fills roughly a third of the frame width, the crop lands between the top of the shoulders and the sternum, and there is a little air above the head. Wider than that and the face becomes too small to read at thumbnail size, which is how most people will see it.
2. **Eye line.** The eyes sit slightly above the center of the frame and look straight into the lens. A camera held above eye level shrinks the jaw and reads as a selfie; a camera held below it exaggerates the chin. Level is the safe default for almost everyone.
3. **Background separation.** The subject is clearly in front of the background, not part of it. That comes from a neutral tone that contrasts with hair and clothing, a slight blur, or both. Busy patterns, bright windows and other people compete for attention.
4. **Lighting quality.** Light comes from one soft, large source at roughly 45 degrees, so the face has gentle shape without hard shadows under the nose and eyes. Overhead office light, harsh sun and a phone flash are the three most common ways good headshot examples turn into bad ones.
5. **Expression and authenticity.** The best expression is a relaxed, closed-mouth or small smile with engaged eyes. A forced grin or a blank stare both look posed. If you would be embarrassed to make the face in a video call, it does not belong in your headshot.

The three pairs below show the first, second and fourth criteria in action. The same person is photographed twice in each pair; only one variable changes.

## Framing, distance and light, side by side

- **Works.** ![Headshot cropped from the shoulders up with the face filling a third of the frame and a little space above the head](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/guidance/framing-works.webp) Shoulders-up crop, eyes just above center, air above the head.
- **Works.** ![Photo taken from a step back so facial proportions look natural and the face is large enough to read](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/guidance/distance-works.webp) Taken from a step back, so the features keep their true proportions.
- **Works.** ![Face lit by soft window light from one side, with gentle shadow and no harsh highlights](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/guidance/light-works.webp) One soft source from the side gives the face shape without hard shadows.
- **Turned down.** ![Photo where the subject is small in a wide frame with too much empty space around them](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/guidance/framing-turned-down.webp) Too wide: the face is a small fraction of the frame and disappears at thumbnail size.
- **Turned down.** ![Arm's length selfie where the nose and forehead look enlarged by the close phone lens](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/guidance/distance-turned-down.webp) Arm's length: the short phone lens widens the nose and forehead.
- **Turned down.** ![Face lit from directly overhead with dark shadows under the eyes and nose](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/guidance/light-turned-down.webp) Overhead light: shadows sink into the eye sockets and under the nose.

> **How to read the galleries below:** Every pack in Smart Headshots AI has six attire options and six backdrop options, and the look-book images are generated once per option to show what each one looks like. Each headshot in a real order is trained on your own photos to match your likeness, so the person changes, but the framing, styling and backdrop will follow the examples shown here. Results vary with the quality of the source photos you upload and the pack you choose.

## Examples by Role

The same five criteria apply to every industry, but each role has its own conventions for formality, setting and color. Below are example looks from each of the eight packs, alternating between the men's and women's sets so you can see both. Every pack page has the full set of twelve options.

### LinkedIn headshot examples

LinkedIn photo examples should look like the person you would meet in a first call: approachable, clearly lit and cropped tight enough to survive a 48 pixel circle. The [LinkedIn Headshots pack](/linkedin-headshots) leans on soft neutrals, knitwear and open collars rather than full suits, because most profiles sit next to a casual company page, not a courtroom. These linkedin photo samples show the attire options in the women's set.

## LinkedIn pack, attire options

- **Charcoal blazer, white shirt** (outfit): ![Charcoal blazer, white shirt outfit example from the LinkedIn Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/linkedin/woman/attire/charcoal-blazer-white-shirt.webp)
- **Navy crewneck knit** (outfit): ![Navy crewneck knit outfit example from the LinkedIn Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/linkedin/woman/attire/navy-crewneck-knit.webp)
- **Light grey suit, no tie** (outfit): ![Light grey suit, no tie outfit example from the LinkedIn Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/linkedin/woman/attire/light-grey-suit-no-tie.webp)
- **Black turtleneck** (outfit): ![Black turtleneck outfit example from the LinkedIn Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/linkedin/woman/attire/black-turtleneck.webp)

Notice that none of these looks is loud. A charcoal blazer over a white shirt or a navy crewneck knit reads as competent without stealing attention from the face, which is exactly what a profile photo needs. Start a [LinkedIn order](/start?pack=linkedin) if this is the look you want.

### Corporate and professional headshot examples

The [Professional Headshots pack](/professional-headshots) is the most formal of the general-purpose packs: two-piece suits, silk ties and tailored blouses against seamless studio tones and lobby bokeh. It is the right example of professional headshot styling for company directories, annual reports and any team page where everyone should match.

## Professional pack, backdrop options

- **Seamless charcoal** (backdrop): ![Seamless charcoal backdrop example from the Professional Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/professional/man/backdrops/seamless-charcoal.webp)
- **Corporate lobby bokeh** (backdrop): ![Corporate lobby bokeh backdrop example from the Professional Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/professional/man/backdrops/corporate-lobby-bokeh.webp)
- **Neutral beige studio** (backdrop): ![Neutral beige studio backdrop example from the Professional Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/professional/man/backdrops/neutral-beige-studio.webp)
- **Boardroom depth** (backdrop): ![Boardroom depth backdrop example from the Professional Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/professional/man/backdrops/boardroom-depth.webp)

The backdrops here do the quiet work. Seamless charcoal and slate grey gradient give maximum separation for a dark suit; corporate lobby bokeh and boardroom depth add context without adding clutter. If your team needs a uniform set, pick one backdrop and one or two attire options for everyone. [Start a Professional order](/start?pack=professional).

### Doctor and nurse headshot examples

Medical headshots need to establish trust and clinical context immediately, which is why the [Doctor & Nurse Headshots pack](/doctor-headshots) pairs a white coat, scrubs or a soft blue shirt with clean clinic neutrals and daylight exam rooms. The white coat is the most recognizable uniform in any profession, so a headshot example for a physician directory almost always includes it.

## Doctor & Nurse pack, attire options

- **White coat over shirt and tie** (outfit): ![White coat over shirt and tie outfit example from the Doctor & Nurse Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/doctor/woman/attire/white-coat-over-shirt-and-tie.webp)
- **White coat over navy scrubs** (outfit): ![White coat over navy scrubs outfit example from the Doctor & Nurse Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/doctor/woman/attire/white-coat-over-navy-scrubs.webp)
- **Teal scrubs, no coat** (outfit): ![Teal scrubs, no coat outfit example from the Doctor & Nurse Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/doctor/woman/attire/teal-scrubs-no-coat.webp)
- **White coat with stethoscope** (outfit): ![White coat with stethoscope outfit example from the Doctor & Nurse Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/doctor/woman/attire/white-coat-with-stethoscope.webp)

White coat over navy scrubs is the safest choice for hospital directories, while a soft blue shirt with no coat suits private practice and telehealth listings where patients want to see a person before a credential. [Start a Doctor & Nurse order](/start?pack=doctor).

### Lawyer headshot examples

The [Lawyer Headshots pack](/lawyer-headshots) is the most conservative set we offer, and deliberately so. Three-piece charcoal, navy with a burgundy tie, black suit with a white shirt, and a tailored grey skirt suit, against oak law libraries, walnut panelling and courthouse columns. Firm websites and bar directories reward restraint, and these headshot photo examples show how much authority a dark suit gains from a warm, low-key background.

## Lawyer pack, backdrop options

- **Oak law library** (backdrop): ![Oak law library backdrop example from the Lawyer Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/lawyer/man/backdrops/oak-law-library.webp)
- **Deep walnut panelling** (backdrop): ![Deep walnut panelling backdrop example from the Lawyer Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/lawyer/man/backdrops/deep-walnut-panelling.webp)
- **Courthouse columns, blurred** (backdrop): ![Courthouse columns, blurred backdrop example from the Lawyer Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/lawyer/man/backdrops/courthouse-columns-blurred.webp)
- **Charcoal seamless** (backdrop): ![Charcoal seamless backdrop example from the Lawyer Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/lawyer/man/backdrops/charcoal-seamless.webp)

Deep walnut panelling and leather-bound shelves pull the eye toward the face because the subject is the brightest thing in the frame. Charcoal seamless is the choice when a firm wants every partner on the same neutral. [Start a Lawyer order](/start?pack=lawyer).

### Founder and executive headshot examples

Founders sit in an odd spot: too formal and the press kit looks like a bank, too casual and it looks like a dorm. The [Founder & Executive pack](/founder-headshots) solves that with black turtlenecks, unstructured blazers over tees, denim shirts with rolled sleeves and a clean-cut grey hoodie, set in concrete lofts, exposed brick and whiteboard blur.

## Founder & Executive pack, attire options

- **Black turtleneck** (outfit): ![Black turtleneck outfit example from the Founder & Executive pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/founder/man/attire/black-turtleneck.webp)
- **Denim shirt, sleeves rolled** (outfit): ![Denim shirt, sleeves rolled outfit example from the Founder & Executive pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/founder/man/attire/denim-shirt-sleeves-rolled.webp)
- **Unstructured blazer over tee** (outfit): ![Unstructured blazer over tee outfit example from the Founder & Executive pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/founder/man/attire/unstructured-blazer-over-tee.webp)
- **Clean-cut grey hoodie** (outfit): ![Clean-cut grey hoodie outfit example from the Founder & Executive pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/founder/man/attire/clean-cut-grey-hoodie.webp)

The black turtleneck against matte black seamless is the classic launch-page portrait; the denim shirt in warehouse window light is the friendlier option for a company blog or a podcast guest slot. [Start a Founder order](/start?pack=founder).

### Real estate headshot examples

Buyers and sellers want an agent who looks like someone they could hand keys to. The [Real Estate Agents pack](/real-estate-agent-headshots) uses navy and soft blue blazers, camel jackets over knits and white shirts with rolled sleeves, and it is the only pack where most backdrops are environmental: sunlit porches, tree-lined streets, staged living rooms and golden-hour driveways.

## Real Estate pack, backdrop options

- **Sunlit porch exterior** (backdrop): ![Sunlit porch exterior backdrop example from the Real Estate Agents pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/realestate/woman/backdrops/sunlit-porch-exterior.webp)
- **Modern kitchen bokeh** (backdrop): ![Modern kitchen bokeh backdrop example from the Real Estate Agents pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/realestate/woman/backdrops/modern-kitchen-bokeh.webp)
- **Tree-lined street** (backdrop): ![Tree-lined street backdrop example from the Real Estate Agents pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/realestate/woman/backdrops/tree-lined-street.webp)
- **Staged living room** (backdrop): ![Staged living room backdrop example from the Real Estate Agents pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/realestate/woman/backdrops/staged-living-room.webp)

Environmental backdrops work here because the setting is the product. Keep them slightly blurred, as these examples are, so the house frames you rather than the other way round. [Start a Real Estate order](/start?pack=realestate).

### Academic and author headshot examples

Faculty pages, book jackets and conference programs share a visual language: tweed, knit blazers, merino roll-necks, and book-lined studies or lecture halls. The [Author & Academic pack](/academic-speaker-headshots) leans warm and textured, which reads as thoughtful rather than corporate.

## Author & Academic pack, attire options

- **Tweed jacket, elbow patches** (outfit): ![Tweed jacket, elbow patches outfit example from the Author & Academic pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/academic/woman/attire/tweed-jacket-elbow-patches.webp)
- **Knit blazer over shirt** (outfit): ![Knit blazer over shirt outfit example from the Author & Academic pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/academic/woman/attire/knit-blazer-over-shirt.webp)
- **Merino roll-neck** (outfit): ![Merino roll-neck outfit example from the Author & Academic pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/academic/woman/attire/merino-roll-neck.webp)
- **Linen jacket, open collar** (outfit): ![Linen jacket, open collar outfit example from the Author & Academic pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/academic/woman/attire/linen-jacket-open-collar.webp)

A tweed jacket with elbow patches is almost a caricature until you see it in a real department directory, where it is simply the norm. Structured cardigans and dark blazers with a silk scarf are the softer alternatives for therapy directories and author bios. [Start an Academic order](/start?pack=academic).

### Dating profile photo examples

Dating photos are the one category where "professional" means something different: well lit, flattering and natural, but not corporate. The [Dating Profiles pack](/dating-profile-photos) uses casual knits, open linen shirts, denim jackets and flannel, in golden-hour parks, rooftop bars and sunlit cafe windows. The framing rules still apply; the tie does not.

## Dating pack, backdrop options

- **Golden-hour park** (backdrop): ![Golden-hour park backdrop example from the Dating Profiles pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/dating/man/backdrops/golden-hour-park.webp)
- **City street at dusk** (backdrop): ![City street at dusk backdrop example from the Dating Profiles pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/dating/man/backdrops/city-street-at-dusk.webp)
- **Rooftop bar bokeh** (backdrop): ![Rooftop bar bokeh backdrop example from the Dating Profiles pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/dating/man/backdrops/rooftop-bar-bokeh.webp)
- **Sunlit café window** (backdrop): ![Sunlit café window backdrop example from the Dating Profiles pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/dating/man/backdrops/sunlit-caf-window.webp)

Warm evening light and a slightly imperfect setting are what make these feel like a real Saturday rather than a studio session. [Start a Dating order](/start?pack=dating).

## Examples by Backdrop

Backdrop is the fastest way to change what a headshot says without changing the person. Across the eight packs the 48 backdrop options fall into four families, and the full [headshot backgrounds guide](/guides/headshot-backgrounds) covers when to use each. Here is each family with example looks.

### Studio neutrals: grey, white, beige

Neutral studio tones are the default for a reason. They separate any hair color and any outfit from the background, they match across a whole team, and they never date. Soft studio grey, warm white cyclorama and neutral beige studio are the three you will see most often in good headshot examples.

## Studio neutrals from the LinkedIn pack

- **Soft studio grey** (backdrop): ![Soft studio grey backdrop example from the LinkedIn Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/linkedin/man/backdrops/soft-studio-grey.webp)
- **Blurred office atrium** (backdrop): ![Blurred office atrium backdrop example from the LinkedIn Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/linkedin/man/backdrops/blurred-office-atrium.webp)
- **Warm white cyclorama** (backdrop): ![Warm white cyclorama backdrop example from the LinkedIn Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/linkedin/man/backdrops/warm-white-cyclorama.webp)

### Workplace and office blur

A blurred office, a glass meeting room or a clinic corridor adds context: this person works somewhere real. The blur matters. Sharp desks and monitors pull attention from the face, so the workplace backdrops in every pack keep the environment soft.

## Workplace backdrops from the Doctor & Nurse pack

- **Clean clinic neutral** (backdrop): ![Clean clinic neutral backdrop example from the Doctor & Nurse Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/doctor/man/backdrops/clean-clinic-neutral.webp)
- **Hospital corridor bokeh** (backdrop): ![Hospital corridor bokeh backdrop example from the Doctor & Nurse Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/doctor/man/backdrops/hospital-corridor-bokeh.webp)
- **Daylight exam room** (backdrop): ![Daylight exam room backdrop example from the Doctor & Nurse Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/doctor/man/backdrops/daylight-exam-room.webp)

### Dark and low-key

Charcoal seamless, matte black and deep walnut panelling put all of the light on the face. They photograph dark suits as a silhouette with a bright face on top, which is why lawyers and executives gravitate toward them. They are less forgiving of dark hair against a dark ground, so pair them with a lighter shirt or top.

## Low-key backdrops from the Founder & Executive pack

- **Concrete studio loft** (backdrop): ![Concrete studio loft backdrop example from the Founder & Executive pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/founder/woman/backdrops/concrete-studio-loft.webp)
- **Exposed brick workspace** (backdrop): ![Exposed brick workspace backdrop example from the Founder & Executive pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/founder/woman/backdrops/exposed-brick-workspace.webp)
- **Whiteboard blur** (backdrop): ![Whiteboard blur backdrop example from the Founder & Executive pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/founder/woman/backdrops/whiteboard-blur.webp)

### Outdoor and environmental

Porches, streets, quads and boardwalks tell a story about where you spend your day. They suit real estate, dating and some academic profiles, and they are a poor fit for a legal directory. The trade-off is consistency: outdoor light changes, so a team shot on outdoor backdrops will not match the way a studio set does.

## Environmental backdrops from the Academic pack

- **Lecture hall, blurred** (backdrop): ![Lecture hall, blurred backdrop example from the Author & Academic pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/academic/man/backdrops/lecture-hall-blurred.webp)
- **Book-lined study** (backdrop): ![Book-lined study backdrop example from the Author & Academic pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/academic/man/backdrops/book-lined-study.webp)
- **Campus quad, soft light** (backdrop): ![Campus quad, soft light backdrop example from the Author & Academic pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/academic/man/backdrops/campus-quad-soft-light.webp)

## Examples by Attire

Clothing sets the formality dial. The table below groups the attire options across all packs by style so you can find the family first and the pack second. The [what to wear guide](/guides/what-to-wear-headshot) goes deeper on color, fit and what to avoid.

## Attire families across the packs

Option names are taken from the pack definitions; every pack offers six attire choices.

| Style | Example options | Packs | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Full suit and tie | Navy suit silk tie, Three-piece charcoal suit, Navy suit burgundy tie | Professional, Lawyer | Law firms, finance, board and directory pages |
| Blazer, open collar | Charcoal blazer white shirt, Navy blazer open collar, Steel-grey blazer, Pinstripe jacket open collar | LinkedIn, Professional, Real Estate, Lawyer | Most corporate profiles; polished without a tie |
| Turtleneck and knitwear | Black turtleneck, Merino roll-neck, Navy crewneck knit, Merino cardigan over tee | LinkedIn, Founder, Academic | Creative, tech and academic profiles |
| Medical uniform | White coat over shirt and tie, White coat over navy scrubs, Teal scrubs no coat | Doctor & Nurse | Hospital directories, clinic sites, telehealth |
| Shirt, sleeves rolled | Denim shirt sleeves rolled, White shirt sleeves rolled, Soft flannel sleeves rolled | Founder, Real Estate, Dating | Approachable, hands-on roles |
| Casual and tee | Plain white tee, Simple black tee, Clean-cut grey hoodie, Denim jacket over tee | Founder, Dating | Startups, personal sites, dating profiles |
| Textured and tailored blouse | Ivory blouse tailored, Dark blazer silk shell, Tweed jacket elbow patches, Dark blazer silk scarf | Professional, Lawyer, Academic | Senior professional and faculty portraits |

### Suits and tailoring

A suit photographs best when the lapels are clean and the shirt is a clear tone lighter than the jacket. The Professional pack's men's attire set shows the range from a charcoal two-piece to a black suit with an open collar.

## Tailoring from the Professional pack

- **Charcoal two-piece suit** (outfit): ![Charcoal two-piece suit outfit example from the Professional Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/professional/man/attire/charcoal-two-piece-suit.webp)
- **Navy suit, silk tie** (outfit): ![Navy suit, silk tie outfit example from the Professional Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/professional/man/attire/navy-suit-silk-tie.webp)
- **Crisp white shirt, no jacket** (outfit): ![Crisp white shirt, no jacket outfit example from the Professional Headshots pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/professional/man/attire/crisp-white-shirt-no-jacket.webp)

### Knitwear and turtlenecks

Knitwear removes the collar problem entirely and gives a clean line from jaw to shoulder. It is the most flattering option for round faces and the least fussy to photograph, which is why it appears in three different packs.

## Knitwear from the Academic pack

- **Tweed jacket, elbow patches** (outfit): ![Tweed jacket, elbow patches outfit example from the Author & Academic pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/academic/man/attire/tweed-jacket-elbow-patches.webp)
- **Knit blazer over shirt** (outfit): ![Knit blazer over shirt outfit example from the Author & Academic pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/academic/man/attire/knit-blazer-over-shirt.webp)
- **Merino roll-neck** (outfit): ![Merino roll-neck outfit example from the Author & Academic pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/academic/man/attire/merino-roll-neck.webp)

### Casual and approachable

Rolled sleeves, denim and a plain tee say "I do the work myself." They fit founders, agents and dating profiles, and they fail on legal or medical directories where the uniform is part of the message.

## Casual looks from the Dating pack

- **Casual knit sweater** (outfit): ![Casual knit sweater outfit example from the Dating Profiles pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/dating/woman/attire/casual-knit-sweater.webp)
- **White linen shirt, open** (outfit): ![White linen shirt, open outfit example from the Dating Profiles pack](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/looks/dating/woman/attire/white-linen-shirt-open.webp)

## Before and After: Real Transformations

This is the section that answers the question everyone has about AI headshots: is this real, and does it still look like me? Each pair below shows an original source photo on the left and a finished headshot on the right. The headshot on the right was trained on the person's own photos, so likeness comes from the source and only framing, styling, light and background change. Look at how the eye line, crop and light on the right follow the five criteria at the top of this page, and how the face stays recognizably the same person.

Two honest caveats. First, the quality of the result depends heavily on the source photos: sharp, well-lit photos taken from a step back produce sharper likeness than dim arm's-length selfies, and our [phone headshot guide](/guides/how-to-take-a-headshot-with-your-phone) explains exactly how to take them. Second, not every headshot in a set will be a keeper; you get a full set so you can choose the best few.

## Casual: denim jacket on a city street at dusk

- **Dating Profiles pack:** ![Finished photo of the same person in a denim jacket and dark T-shirt on a city street at dusk with a slight smile](https://www.smartheadshots.ai/assets/before-after/seed-34-after.jpeg)

What these pairs have in common is that the transformation is in the setting, not the face. The blazer, the coat, the panelling and the light are what a studio would have added; the person is the same one who took the selfie. That is the standard to hold any headshot example to, AI or not: if you have to squint to recognize the subject, the photo has failed at its only job.

Each order runs through one pack at one of three tiers. Starter delivers 40 headshots at standard resolution in about 2 hours with no re-run; Professional delivers 60 at high resolution in about 1 hour with 1 free re-run; Executive delivers 100 at 4K in 30 to 45 minutes with 1 free re-run. Every tier carries a full refund inside 7 days if the set does not work for you. For guidance on how to stand in the source photos, the [headshot poses guide](/guides/headshot-poses) covers angles, shoulders and where to put your hands.

## Using these examples for your own headshot

**Do**

- Pick the pack that matches where the photo will live: a directory, a profile, a book jacket or a dating app.
- Choose one backdrop family and one or two attire options so your set looks intentional rather than random.
- Upload source photos taken from a step back in soft, even light; the results inherit whatever the sources give them.
- Judge every candidate against the five criteria at the top of this page before you publish it.
- Use the same headshot on LinkedIn, your email signature and your company page so people recognize you across all three.

**Do not**

- Treat the look-book galleries as customer results; they are option previews, and only the before-and-after pairs show real deliveries.
- Expect every headshot in a set to be a keeper; you get a full set so you can choose the strongest few.
- Pick a casual look for a legal or medical directory just because it photographs nicely; the uniform is part of the message.
- Upload dim arm's-length selfies and expect a sharp, proportioned result.
- Publish a headshot you would not recognize as yourself in a video call.

## Key takeaways

- A good headshot has five qualities: tight framing, a level eye line, background separation, soft directional light and a natural expression.
- Role sets the conventions: suits and low-key backdrops for law and corporate, white coats and clinic neutrals for medicine, knitwear and lofts for founders, environmental settings for real estate and dating.
- Backdrop changes the story without changing the person; studio neutrals are the safest default and the easiest to match across a team.
- Attire sets the formality dial, from full suit and tie down to a plain tee, and every Smart Headshots AI pack offers six options along that dial.
- In a real before-and-after, only the setting should transform. If the face is not recognizably you, the headshot has failed.
- Source photo quality drives result quality more than any other choice you make.

## FAQ

### What does a good professional headshot look like?

A good professional headshot is cropped from the shoulders up with the face filling about a third of the frame, has the eyes slightly above center looking straight into the lens, uses soft light from one side, keeps the background neutral or gently blurred so the subject stands out, and shows a relaxed, natural expression. The clothing matches the formality of the role, and the subject is clearly recognizable at thumbnail size. Every good headshot example on this page follows those rules; the bad ones break at least two of them.

### How many headshots should I have?

Most professionals need two or three headshots in active use: one formal version for directories and company pages, one slightly more relaxed version for LinkedIn and social profiles, and optionally one environmental or casual version for speaking bios or personal sites. Having a full set to choose from makes that easy, which is why Smart Headshots AI delivers 40, 60 or 100 headshots per order depending on tier, so you can pick the strongest few for each use.

### What is the difference between a headshot and a portrait?

A headshot is a tightly framed photo of the head and shoulders whose purpose is identification: it shows what you look like for a profile, directory or bio. A portrait is a broader category that can include half or full body, props, environment and artistic lighting, and its purpose is expression or storytelling. Every headshot is a portrait, but most portraits are not headshots. If the image is meant to sit in a small circle next to your name, you want a headshot.

### Should a headshot be black and white?

Usually not. Color is the default for LinkedIn, company directories and most professional profiles because it shows skin tone, eye color and clothing accurately and matches the rest of the page. Black and white can work for author bios, speaker programs and creative industries where a more timeless or editorial feel is wanted, and it hides uneven color casts from mixed lighting. If you are unsure, publish the color version and keep a black and white conversion for print or press use.
